What you need to know

  • PADI Boat Diver manual or e‑learning for theory review.
  • Knowledge session covering boat terminology, safety equipment and etiquette.
  • Two open‑water boat dives where you practise entries/exits, gear stowage, navigation using boat reference points and SMB deployment.
  • Use of surface signalling devices and current lines.
  • Certification processing and refreshments on board.
  • Transportation to the dive centre or marina.
  • Personal dive kit (mask, fins, regulator, BCD, wetsuit and dive computer).
  • Meals beyond the provided snacks and drinks.
  • Seasickness medication and sun protection (hat, sunglasses).
  • Additional dives or specialty courses beyond the two required for certification.

In this boat diver course, you will learn how to:

  • understand boat types, dive boat terminology, and safety equipment
  • organize and stow scuba equipment neatly on board
  • perform safe back-roll, giant-stride, and negative entries
  • use current lines and descend with better control
  • navigate using boat reference points underwater
  • deploy a surface marker buoy safely during ascent
  • communicate effectively with crew and other divers during recreational boat diving

This scuba boat diving course is designed to give you hands-on experience that supports safer and smoother dives from a range of vessels.

After successfully completing the course requirements, divers earn a boat diver certification through the PADI Boat Diver specialty. This boat diving certification confirms that you have completed training in safe and effective boat-diving procedures and are prepared for more confident recreational boat diving experiences.

  • Your own dive gear (mask, fins, wetsuit, BCD, regulator) and dive computer.
  • SMB and reel (provided if you don’t have one).
  • Swimwear, towel, sunscreen, hat and seasickness tablets if prone to motion sickness.
  • Water bottle and light snack.
  • A readiness to learn boat procedures and etiquette.

  2. Boat Dive 1: Practise back‑roll or giant‑stride entries, line descents, current lines and safe exits.
  3. Boat Dive 2: Refine negative entries, navigate using boat reference points and deploy an SMB during ascent.
  4. Debrief: Discuss additional tips for liveaboards, dhows and ribs; sign logbooks and process certification.
  • Duration: One day consisting of a theory session and two dives.
  • Timing: Morning or afternoon departures 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM (daily) 
  • Group size: Up to four divers per instructor to ensure safety and practice time.
  • Location: Theory session in Dubai; boat dives in Dibba Al‑Fujairah or Musandam on various vessels.
  • This specialty is essential for divers who primarily dive from boats and plan to travel on liveaboards or dhows.
  • Practise stowing equipment neatly and using surface signals; these skills improve safety and buddy awareness.
  • Always be ready to adapt to different boat types; each vessel has unique procedures and equipment.
  • The course does not extend depth limits; dive within your certification level.
  • Pair this specialty with Drift Diver or Deep Diver for a well‑rounded skill set.
