What you need to know

  • Instructor briefing and theory review on compass and natural navigation.
  • Three open‑water navigation dives from a dive boat, supervised by a navigation specialist.
  • Use of compasses, navigation slates and surface marker buoys (SMBs) for marking positions.
  • Boat transport to training sites in Dibba Al‑Fujairah or Musandam and light refreshments.
  • Certification processing and personalised feedback.
  • Transportation to the dive centre and any border requirements for Musandam.
  • Personal gear (mask, fins, BCD, regulator, wetsuit, dive computer and SMB) and compass if you prefer to use your own.
  • Meals beyond snacks and optional specialty bundles.
  • Dive insurance (recommended) and additional courses.
  • Extra navigation practice dives outside the three required for certification.
  • Natural navigation: Read sand ripples, sunlight patterns, reef contours and time/air consumption to maintain orientation.
  • Compass navigation: Perform straight‑line, square and triangular patterns; navigate multi‑leg courses using bearings and kick cycles.
  • Combine natural clues with compass headings to find your way back without surfacing.
  • Deploy an SMB to mark a location for boat pickup or search & recovery operations.
  • Build confidence leading dives, making you a better buddy and future divemaster.
  • Standard scuba kit (mask, fins, BCD, regulators, wetsuit) and dive computer.
  • Compass (provided if you do not own one) and SMB with reel.
  • Swimwear, towel, reef‑safe sunscreen and water bottle.
  • Notebook or slate if you like to record bearings and kick cycles.
  • Willingness to practise navigation on land and underwater.
  1. Book & theory: Sign up for the course and review navigation theory with your instructor.
  2. Dive 1: Practise natural navigation – follow contours, count kick cycles, estimate distance and time using natural cues.
  3. Dive 2: Combine compass and natural navigation; perform square and rectangular patterns and maintain orientation.
  4. Dive 3: Plan and execute a multi‑leg navigation course; search for an object; deploy an SMB to mark a location and return directly to the starting point.
  5. Debrief & certification: Discuss successes and improvements; log your dives and receive your Underwater Navigator certification.
  • Duration: Two to three days depending on scheduling and sea conditions Each session lasts for 3 hours
  • Timing: Daily start times at 9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM. 
  • Group size: Maximum four students per instructor for personalised coaching.
  • Location: Confined briefing in Dubai pool/classroom; open‑water dives in Dibba Al‑Fujairah or Musandam.
  • Regular practice makes navigation skills second nature; use your compass on every dive.
  • Navigation dives remain within your current depth limit (18 m for Open Water, 30 m for Advanced).
  • Using an SMB to mark a spot is a valuable skill for search & recovery and boat pickup; handle the reel carefully.
  • Combine this specialty with Search & Recovery, Peak Performance Buoyancy or Rescue Diver for a versatile skill set.
  • Keep a mental map of the reef and note landmark features; these habits improve your confidence underwater.
