Car Cemetery in Fujairah

About Dive Site

The Car Cemetery is a unique wreck site that began as an underwater graveyard of roughly 200 vehicles intentionally sunk in 1988 to create artificial reefs. After cyclone Gonu reduced the number of vehicles, around 50 cars and trucks now rest at 16–18 m depth, forming a compact yet fascinating dive area. The wrecks are connected by ropes, guiding divers through a maze of metal parts, barnacles and coral growth.

Decades underwater have turned discarded cars and trucks into thriving reefs coated with algae, barnacles and red, blue and orange corals. Guide ropes connect the wrecks, making navigation easy and safe. With shallow depth and good accessibility, the site is suitable for Open Water divers and photographers. The juxtaposition of man‑made metal and natural coral colonisation tells a story of renewal and biodiversity.

Car Cemetery is a macro photographer’s paradise. An estimated 300 species of nudibranch inhabit UAE waters, and many can be found here. Look for nudibranch species such as the red‑ringed purple‑spotted dorid, red‑papulose Gymnodoris, red‑lined Flabellina and yellowish‑orange Chromodorid. Seahorses cling to sea fans or car parts, changing colours to blend in. Blennies occupy crevices and tyres, while honeycomb moray eels lurk in holes. Stingrays occasionally rest in the sand; Omani clingfish may be found beneath crinoids.

  • Open Water divers and above: The depth range and guided layout make this an easy and enjoyable wreck dive.
  • Macro photographers: Nudibranchs, seahorses and blennies offer endless photographic opportunities.
  • Marine life enthusiasts: Witness how artificial structures support a diverse ecosystem.
  • Watch out for fishing nets and entanglement hazards on some vehicles.
  • Maintain buoyancy to avoid stirring up sediment or damaging corals.
  • Do not penetrate enclosed car bodies; they are unstable and not designed for entry.
  • Bring a torch to examine crevices and locate hidden creatures.
