About Dive Site

Lima Rock is a limestone pinnacle guarding the southern entrance to Lima Bay in Musandam, Oman. The island’s steep, jagged sides have been undercut by waves, creating caves and fissures that invite exploration. Divers love Lima Rock because it offers dramatic walls that drop almost vertically before giving way to boulder fields and a sandy bottom beyond 60 metres. The site can be dived in almost any weather or tide: if currents run hard on one side, the other side remains calm, making this a reliable year‑round destination for both divers and snorkellers.

What Makes This Dive Special

The island’s cliffs plunge to about 12 m before boulders and scree tumble steeply to the sand at more than 60 m. In calm seas, you can cruise around the entire pinnacle: shallow caves, deep fissures and narrow gullies break up the otherwise sheer walls. On the southern side, a pair of caves once sheltered a 2.5‑m nurse shark; a massive boulder at the southeastern tip makes a perfect perch to watch for pelagic visitors such as tuna, jacks, sharks and manta rays. If currents become strong at one end of the island, simply move to the sheltered side and continue your dive or snorkel.

Marine Life You May Encounter

Between 12 and 20 m, the boulder field is carpeted with hard corals – table, staghorn, brain and boulder corals – interspersed with patches of orange and pink teddy‑bear soft coral. At 20 m and deeper, yellow and green black corals and purple coral clumps appear among the sand. Large shoals of reef fish swirl around the coral slopes, while yellow‑mouth moray eels peer out from crevices. On deeper sand shelves, you might see resting white‑tip reef sharks and leopard sharks. Keep an eye out in the blue for passing manta rays, whale sharks or sunfish near the southeastern boulder.

Who This Dive Is Best For

Certified divers at all levels: The sheltered sides and manageable depth ranges make Lima Rock suitable for Open Water divers; deeper walls appeal to advanced divers.
Snorkellers: Calm areas close to the island and abundant fish life provide excellent snorkelling opportunities; the north side offers more shelter.
Pelagic enthusiasts and photographers: The chance of spotting large pelagics from the southeastern boulder, combined with diverse coral scenery, rewards patient observers.

Safety & Conditions Note

Beware of currents at the eastern and western tips; always check conditions and plan entries accordingly.
Maintain situational awareness when exploring caves and fissures.
Use a surface marker buoy if currents could carry you away from the island.
Snorkellers should keep close to the rock face on the north side for maximum shelter.
