The island’s cliffs plunge to about 12 m before boulders and scree tumble steeply to the sand at more than 60 m. In calm seas, you can cruise around the entire pinnacle: shallow caves, deep fissures and narrow gullies break up the otherwise sheer walls. On the southern side, a pair of caves once sheltered a 2.5‑m nurse shark; a massive boulder at the southeastern tip makes a perfect perch to watch for pelagic visitors such as tuna, jacks, sharks and manta rays. If currents become strong at one end of the island, simply move to the sheltered side and continue your dive or snorkel.
Between 12 and 20 m, the boulder field is carpeted with hard corals – table, staghorn, brain and boulder corals – interspersed with patches of orange and pink teddy‑bear soft coral. At 20 m and deeper, yellow and green black corals and purple coral clumps appear among the sand. Large shoals of reef fish swirl around the coral slopes, while yellow‑mouth moray eels peer out from crevices. On deeper sand shelves, you might see resting white‑tip reef sharks and leopard sharks. Keep an eye out in the blue for passing manta rays, whale sharks or sunfish near the southeastern boulder.
