Octopus Rock in Musandam

About Dive Site

Octopus Rock is an isolated stack rising from the seabed 3 km offshore north of Lima. Roughly 50 m in diameter, this round rock drops steeply to a mixed rock‑and‑sand floor, with ridges running west and north that form gullies. Sheltered within Lima Bay, the site is diveable in most weather and tidal conditions and has earned the nickname “marine zoo” for its abundant life.

The undercut top of Octopus Rock and the terraces circling its base create varied topography for exploration. After descending to the base, most divers swim north to a rocky cliff that runs east‑west. Beyond the cliff, gullies slope off to more than 50 m; if you continue exploring, remember to monitor your bearings to avoid straying too far from the rock. Alternatively, circle the rock’s terraces or swim north‑west to shallow outcrops 5–8 m below the surface where reef fish congregate. Snorkellers will enjoy duck diving around the stack or exploring these outcrops.

Octopus Rock is alive with soft and hard corals: green‑coloured black coral, purple soft coral whips and pink/orange teddy‑bear corals provide a kaleidoscope of colour. Around the stack, shoals of fish swirl in the current; further from the rock, look for trevally, jacks, tuna, barracuda and rays. The rock itself shelters fanworms, feather stars, juvenile crayfish and anemones, while overhangs may hide black or red lionfish—observe but avoid touching these venomous fish. On the sandy floor, stingrays feed or rest under coral ledges, and divers have a good chance of seeing nurse sharks and leopard sharks.

  • Experienced Open Water and Advanced divers: Vertical walls and deeper gullies reward confident divers.
  • Snorkellers: Shallow outcrops near the stack offer excellent snorkelling with abundant reef fish.
  • Macro and wide‑angle photographers: Vivid coral gardens and frequent pelagics provide diverse subjects.
  • The site is sheltered, but currents may vary; monitor your navigation carefully when exploring away from the stack.
  • Avoid touching lionfish or other venomous species hiding under overhangs.
  • Bring a reef hook or pointer to steady yourself in stronger currents.
