Shark Island in Fujairah

About Dive Site

Shark Island sits on the southeastern edge of Khor Fakkan Bay and offers two distinct dive zones: a coral‑covered bay and a granite wall. Despite the name, this 15 m‑deep site is approachable for beginners and snorkellers but also holds enough interest for seasoned divers thanks to seasonal shark encounters.

On the bay side, hard corals carpet an area of roughly 200 m while the wall side features imposing granite formations. The contrast between the lush bay and the stark wall creates two very different underwater experiences. Because the island sits in a protected bay, conditions remain manageable for most of the year. The period from November to April brings an extra thrill: blacktip reef sharks are often spotted cruising along the eastern side.

Expect shoals of mackerel and fusiliers plus trevally, cornetfish, Sergeant Majors, batfish, damselfish and barracuda. Large turtles make regular appearances, as do honeycomb moray eels hiding between boulders. During the cooler months, blacktip reef sharks patrol the eastern wall. Tube‑dwelling anemones (cerianthids) add splashes of colour with their long tentacles.

  • Snorkellers and novice divers: Shallow depths and predictable conditions make Shark Island ideal for first‑time divers and snorkellers.
  • Seasoned divers: Shark sightings and varied terrain provide enough excitement for experienced divers.
  • Wildlife enthusiasts: The mix of reef fish, turtles and sharks offers great wildlife watching.
  • Stick to the bay side if currents pick up along the wall.
  • Maintain a respectful distance when observing reef sharks; do not chase or try to touch them.
  • Keep your fins off the coral—much of the bay is shallow and fragile.
