A First Glimpse of Dibba Rock
Most Fujairah stories start here. Dibba Rock sits close enough to shore that you can walk out to it at low tide, which makes the first few minutes of a dive feel less like an expedition and more like slipping into somewhere that was always there, just underneath. In 2008, a red tide event hit this reef hard, and instead of writing the site off, the local diving community declared it a marine protected area and placed artificial reefs to help it recover. What’s down there today, turtles gliding past, moray eels tucked into crevices, the occasional reef shark passing wide, is the result of that recovery holding. It’s a quietly good story before you’ve even finished your first dive.
Snoopy Island, for the Curious
Not everyone who comes to Fujairah is ready for a full dive, and Snoopy Island is where that’s fine. Named for its dog-house silhouette sitting a couple of hundred metres offshore, it’s shallow, sheltered, and forgiving, the kind of place where a snorkel and a mask is enough to watch turtles move through the shallows, or catch a blacktip reef shark keeping its distance along the drop-off. For a lot of divers, this is where the whole thing started: a first look through a mask before the first regulator ever went in their mouth.
Martini Rock, When You’re Ready to Go Deeper
There’s a point in most divers’ first Fujairah season where Dibba Rock starts to feel familiar, and that’s usually when someone suggests Martini Rock. The pinnacle shape, rising up from deeper water almost to the surface, means you spend the whole dive moving through different depths and different light, and the coral color down there, orange and purple and yellow soft coral packed with reef fish, is the kind of thing that turns casual divers into people who start carrying an underwater camera.
Shark Island and the Sites Worth Earning
Some sites you visit because they’re close. Others you visit because of what you might see. Shark Island, also known as Khorfakan, earns its name honestly, blacktip reef sharks are a real, regular sighting here in the cooler months, not a marketing promise. Sharm Rock, a short way along the coast and known locally as “The Three Sisters,” rewards the same kind of patience with its own shallow-water sharks and a coastline of small outcrops that feel more like exploring than diving a single spot.
